What is a quartering operation?

Quartering is a production line process in which a single raw material is converted into multiple smaller finished goods.

This approach is common in certain industrial sectors. For instance, in the meat industry, carcasses are divided into specific cuts that are then stored and sold separately. Another example is the metal industry, where sheets or uprights are cut into smaller pieces for different applications.

Complete traceability and continuous supply via quartering operations

Until now, the WMS for Manufacturing module from Easy WMS — which ensures end-to-end traceability of production processes — primarily managed the manufacturing of finished goods from multiple raw materials (a common practice in many industrial companies).

With the new quartering capability, the module’s increased scope meets the needs of companies with manufacturing processes where a single raw material is transformed into several products with different destinations and values. This enhancement provides full traceability for each product generated, rigorous control of losses, and accurate inventory management. It aligns production operations with the stock control performed by the WMS.

Global scope of the feature

The new quartering capability allows companies to supervise production processes comprehensively: from recipe/BOM definition to order closure and report generation. It also integrates the management of production line supply, raw material consumption, and finished goods creation, with full traceability at every stage.

With this expansion, the WMS for Manufacturing module now covers the following processes applied to quartering operations:

• Recipe/BOM management, both through the Easy WMS user interface and via ERP/MES software.
• Production line supply, either manually or automatically.
• Raw material consumption on production lines, manually or automatically.
• Recording of finished goods.
• Production order closure.
• Additional order actions (cancellation, stoppage, etc.).
• Finished goods label printing.
• Printing of production and traceability reports.

The module’s new capability oversees quartering tasks across three scenarios:

• Fully controlled by WMS for Manufacturing: Supply, consumption, finished goods creation, label printing, and order closure are all handled directly by this Easy WMS module.
• Shared control between WMS for Manufacturing and MES: The module supervises the supply of materials to the production lines, while the MES handles the recipe/BOM, production orders, material consumption, and product creation.
• Fully controlled by the MES: The WMS for Manufacturing module oversees line supply, while the MES takes care of the rest of the process.
