The paper manufacturer expands capacity with the Pallet Shuttle system

Gomà-Camps

Paper manufacturer Gomà-Camps optimizes storage at its Vilaverd (Spain) facility with a warehouse offering over 12,000 pallet positions for finished goods. With this solution, Gomà-Camps has strengthened its logistics management capabilities by combining capacity, efficiency, safety, and sustainability.

Gomà-Camps: Active sustainability that improves everyday life

With facilities in La Riba and Vilaverd (Tarragona), Gomà-Camps manufactures a wide range of paper solutions for different industries, applications, and usage formats. Founded in 1758, the company combines its extensive expertise with a strong commitment to sustainability. Its new warehouse, located next to the production plant, centralizes and streamlines logistics operations. With more than 750 clients and 275 employees, Gomà-Camps manufactures 66,000 tons of paper annually.

CHALLENGES

  • Accommodate finished goods from a paper mill with an annual production capacity of 66,000 tons.
  • Implement fire protection measures in a warehouse storing cellulose-based products.

SOLUTIONS

  • Pallet Shuttle.
  • Selective Pallet Racks.

BENEFITS

  • Optimized storage with more than 12,000 pallet positions for finished goods.
  • Enhanced fire safety through detection systems and fixed pallet separation.

For more than 265 years, family-owned Gomà-Camps has been committed to manufacturing high-quality paper products. Over time, the company has diversified into tissue paper, specializing in paper towels, toilet paper, and products for industrial and hospitality applications. To support continued growth, Gomà-Camps partnered with Mecalux to build a new warehouse next to its manufacturing plant in Vilaverd, Tarragona.

The facility stores finished goods from the production lines. It has a capacity for 12,288 pallets across two systems: Mecalux’s Pallet Shuttle and selective pallet racking.

The semi-automated Pallet Shuttle provides Gomà-Camps with high-density storage and moves goods automatically within the 34.5-foot-high racking. With room for 10,152 pallets, the solution features six motorized shuttles. Once positioned in the storage lanes by forklifts, they move pallets automatically without direct operator involvement.

“We needed a solution that could combine high storage capacity with stringent safety requirements,” says Francesc Subirats, Warehouse Manager at Gomà-Camps. “The Pallet Shuttle enables us to handle finished goods efficiently while making the most of the available space.” Operators control the electric shuttles through Wi-Fi-connected tablets with intuitive software. The system supports functions such as selecting the number of pallets to retrieve, performing inventory counts, and managing user authorizations.

The Gomà-Camps project also includes 29.5-foot-tall selective pallet racks with 2,083 storage positions. This versatile solution provides direct access to products and offers flexibility for temporary requirements, such as activity peaks or load reorganization within the Pallet Shuttle lanes.

Both Mecalux systems feature four storage levels and were tailored to Gomà-Camps’ pallet dimensions and operational requirements. Specifically, they accommodate unit loads up to 8.9' high, a common characteristic of tissue paper products that maximizes storage volume and limits handling.

High capacity with advanced fire protection

The nature of Gomà-Camps’ products requires fire protection measures that exceed conventional standards. To minimize the risk of fire spread while maintaining high storage density, the solutions were designed from the outset to ensure a fixed safety distance between pallets at all times. This controlled separation allows fire detection and suppression systems to operate effectively while meeting safety regulations.

Maintaining this spacing was established as a key requirement during the warehouse layout design phase. Mecalux’s semi-automated Pallet Shuttle was specifically adapted to Gomà-Camps’ safety standards, combining storage capacity, operational efficiency, and regulatory compliance through an integrated approach.

With its new Mecalux solution, Gomà-Camps has strengthened its logistics management capabilities, bringing together capacity, efficiency, safety, and sustainability in a single facility. The warehouse supports current operations while providing a solid foundation for future growth.

The Pallet Shuttle enables us to handle finished goods efficiently while making the most of the available space.
