Mecalux and MIT analyze the role of AI in warehousing following a global study

January 9, 2026

Dr. Matthias Winkenbach, Director of the MIT Intelligent Logistics Systems Lab, and Alejandro González, Software Business Unit Director at Mecalux, have presented the findings of the study “The state of AI in warehousing: Global insights from supply chain leaders on AI’s economic and workforce impact” during a webinar now available online.

Warehouses have undergone continuous transformation in recent years, and AI is already present in six out of ten facilities. “Nearly all warehouses now operate beyond basic automation; most are highly automated,” said Winkenbach. His research team works alongside Mecalux experts on an initiative to develop and implement AI-driven solutions that address the most pressing challenges in logistics. “Growing operational complexity makes AI essential, and organizations have strengthened their technical, data, and integration capabilities — accelerating adoption,” he added.

Alejandro González underlined that, in line with the rapid uptake of AI, the MIT–Mecalux survey shows that 83% of companies increased their use of this technology over the past year. Both experts agreed that AI is already powering the core processes that determine warehouse accuracy, speed, and productivity.

The webinar, which concluded with a live Q&A session, highlighted the report’s key figures while outlining the areas to consider before planning future investments. Winkenbach noted that AI adoption in warehouses is accelerating worldwide, emphasizing that companies that implement it successfully will lead the next era of warehousing.
