Barlinek to open a modern automated distribution center

October 2, 2023

The Polish manufacturer of laminate wood and vinyl flooring will be modernizing its supply chain with two automated storage and retrieval systems, conveyor lines and Mecalux management software.

Wood and vinyl flooring manufacturer Barlinek’s automated distribution center

Barlinek will open a modern distribution center in Poland designed to manage its increased production efficiently. Mecalux will equip the facility with two AS/RS: one will be used for storing the finished products coming off the production line while the other will act as a buffer and be used to organize and coordinate orders prior to dispatch. Both AS/RS will be set up in a 6.5-foot-deep pit to gain space height-wise and in this way achieve enough storage capacity for 37,700 pallets.

Mecalux will install automated conveyor systems connecting the distribution center’s different work areas: the two AS/RS, the order fulfillment area, and the quality control area. The solution will include a line of conveyors and electrified monorails, as well as lifts and transfer cars. Thanks to the automation, Barlinek will be able to move more than 350 pallets every hour between the different areas of the facility.

The implementation of the warehouse management system Easy WMS will optimize operations, coordinate the flow of goods and control stock in real time, ensuring the availability of every product.

Easy WMS will include advanced functionalities designed for efficiently managing Barlinek's complex supply chain operations:

  • Supply Chain Analytics Software. The system will segment and structure the large amount of data generated on a daily-basis at the facility to convert them into useful information that helps the logistics managers make strategic decisions.
  • Labor Management System. It will gauge the performance of the distribution center’s various activities and monitor workflows so that the company can identify improvement opportunities.
  • Multi Carrier Shipping Software. The system will organize the packing and labeling processes and, at the same time, automate communication with the different transportation agencies that distribute Barlinek’s orders. All with the aim of ensuring the highest quality in the dispatch of orders and their delivery to customers.
  • Yard Management System. The software will supervise the movement of vehicles in the yard, at the docks and at the points controlling access to the distribution center. Barlinek will be able to visually monitor every vehicle entering and leaving the center, thereby enabling it to plan goods receipt and dispatch.
  • Warehouse Slotting Software. The program will organize the goods in the two Barlinek AS/RS according to a set of rules and criteria predetermined by the logistics managers. The optimum location of every SKU will result in smoother operations and easier and faster movements of goods.

The automation of storage and transportation processes will enable Barlinek to meet the challenges presented by the increase in production and activity. Digitalization will help to improve the company’s logistics processes and optimize resources.
